PolitiFact Ripped for Addressing Triple H’s WWE vs. Super Bowl Comments

A post-election endeavor for PolitiFact has found the truth-sorter on the receiving end of some harsh criticism. No lie.

PolitiFact NJ, a collaboration between the group and the New Jersey Star-Ledger, covered Triple H’s recent comments that WrestleMania outdraws the Super Bowl.

To address the validity of his claims, they used official arena attendance numbers from WWE and the Super Bowl Media Guide for the six venues that have housed both events. Since WrestleMania’s listed attendance was higher in five of the six cases, they concluded that HHH’s statement was “mostly true.”

The problem is that official attendance sources have long been skewered as misleading, if not downright dishonest. Wrestling reporters have, for instance, famously ripped the alleged 93,173 figure listed for WrestleMania III at the Silverdome. Yet that same questionable figure is cited in PolitiFact’s analysis.

“Kind of funny since the non-worked numbers aren’t that hard to come by. It’s in the form of the Truth-O-Meter that they use for statements by politicians and they concluded that HHH was, in fact, telling the truth. Scary if they’re this good at covering politicians,” wrote Wrestling Observer editor Dave Meltzer.
