“Paranormal Activity 4” Suffers Big Box Office Drop; Still to Win Weekend

The “Paranormal Activity” craze has peaked.

Despite easily positioning the film to win the weekend, Friday’s opening total for “Paranormal Activity 4” was down considerably from the third offering in the series.

“Activity 4” grossed $15 million Friday en route to a likely weekend finish in the $30 millions, down from the $26.3 million Friday bow and $52.6 million weekend bow for last year’s movie.

Behind “Paranormal” was “Argo,” which showed very impressive legs in grossing $5.1 million on Friday. That makes for a drop of only 14% from its opening day number last week.

“Taken 2” clocked in at third ($4.3 million), besting the very disappointing $4.0 million for “Alex Cross.”

That Friday total suggests “Cross”‘s opening weekend will come in below that of “Along Came a Spider,” the last film featuring the James Patterson character ($16.7 million). Given the inclusion of Tyler Perry, a decline from the previous standard should not have been expected.

“Hotel Transylvania” landed in fifth with $3.6 million Friday.
