“Lawless” Underwhelms in Box Office Opening Wednesday

Sources tell Deadline.com that the studio is comfortable with opening week tracking for “Lawless,” but by all reasonable measures, it underwhelmed at the box office on Wednesday.

Though it claimed the top spot for its debut, it earned only $1.1 million for a wide release and thus benefited from a very weak roster of films currently in release. With Labor Day not typically a big weekend for moviegoers, the present expectation is for its cumulative gross to reach the low teens by Monday.

By comparison, “Lawless” earned nearly double what “Hit & Run” garnered in its debut last Wednesday. That comedy went on to earn $4.5 million in its first weekend.
