“The Bourne Legacy,” “The Campaign” Better Than Expected at Box Office

“The Bourne Legacy” and “The Campaign” got off to much stronger than expected starts at the box office Friday, and both now look likely to top reigning king “The Dark Knight Rises.”

For “Bourne,” an overall weekend box office win is a near certainty. The film grossed $14 million on Friday and should flirt with $40 million for the weekend, which is likely enough to double the total “TDKR” posts. Though the opening for the latest “Bourne” film will significantly below that of “The Bourne Ultimatum” ($69.3 million), the last film to star Matt Damon in the lead role, it will still outpace initial projections by about $5-10 million.

“The Campaign,” on the other hand, is looking good for about $28 or $29 million this weekend after hauling $10.2 million on Friday.

For its first Friday of release, “Hope Springs,” landed behind “TDKR” ($5.6 million Friday) on receipts of $4.7 million. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” finished out the top five with $2.9 million.
