Beyond the obvious focus on CM Punk’s WWE Championship victory at Money in the Bank, which includes the storyline complication that Punk would depart WWE with the belt, is interest in how WWE will play up the other key element–whether or not John Cena will be “fired” in storyline.
Two weeks ago on RAW, Vince McMahon confirmed a stipulation that if CM Punk walks out of Chicago with the WWE Championship, he would fire John Cena.
Punk, however, mocked the storyline in his promo last week, reminding that a stipulation calling for Cena’s “firing” last year amounted to almost nothing. When hyping the match during the Money in the Bank telecast, Vince McMahon only said “may God have mercy on John Cena’s soul” if Punk leaves with the belt.
WWE.com’s note on the MITB main-event also leaves some storyline wiggle room. Comments include, “Punk not only leaves WWE with the coveted title, but it appears Cena’s fired” and “He opened a black hole in the WWE Universe, seizing the WWE Championship in his hometown within his final hours as a contracted employee of Vince McMahon, sufficiently embarrassing The WWE Chairman and conquering a presumably fired John Cena, “The Champ.””
