Latest Statement on Nate Marquardt’s UFC Release, Suspension

Details remain murky about what medical issue resulted in Nate Marquardt’s removal from the UFC on Versus 4 card and his subsequent release from the promotion, but a statement from the Pennsylvania athletic commission has cleared some of the process up.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani, the commission’s executive director Greg Sirb says that Marquardt “failed the medical requirements for the fight and was put on suspension by the PA athletic commission until he provides a medical report showing that he’s satisfied those requirements. He was given every opportunity to meet the requirements up until Saturday at 3 pm. The Athletic commission is not free to disclose what requirements he failed to meet.”

The reporter added that Marquardt is also on an indefinite suspension with the commission that will not be cleared up until the fighter can “provide what they are looking for.”

Marquardt’s camp was expected to issue a statement for the UFC on Versus pre-game show Sunday evening.

Saturday, news broke that Marquardt had been dropped from the UFC due to failing his medicals. Charlie Brenneman stepped in as a replacement for the bout with Rick Story.
