Not even given a hype segment on the UFC 124 Countdown special, Jim Miller vs. Charles Oliveira brings a lot of intrigue for hardcore fans.
The young Charles Oliveira has become one of UFC’s most touted prospects among mixed martial arts’ diehards, but Jim Miller undoubtedly represents a stiff test. Since losing to Gray Maynard (his only other career loss came to Frankie Edgar in a non-UFC bout in 2006), Miller has racked up a streak against some impressive UFC lightweights. He might not be immediately on the cusp of a title shot, but a win would definitely assure Miller enters all future conversations about contendership.
Will Oliveira earn the latest “for real” declaration from Joe Rogan? Or, will the consistent, tough Jim Miller prove he’s currently on another level? The result follows:
Round One: An action-packed first-round saw both men open up with aggression. Oliveira opened with some kicks and looked for a leg early, but it was Miller who first brought the action to the ground.
From there, it became a jiu-jitsu battle. Oliveira frustrated Miller’s offense looking for submission attempts, but Miller defended well and ended up grabbing a leg of his own. Miller quickly locked in a knee bar, and his touted opponent had no choice but to tap.
After the fight, the victorious Miller asked UFC’s head honchos (Dana White and Joe Silva) for his title shot.
Jim Miller b. Charles Oliveira via submission (kneebar) at 1:59 of Round One.
