WWE Eyes Major Celebrity Angle for WrestleMania 27

Though the hoped-for angle between WWE Superstar The Undertaker and former-WWE Superstar-turned ex-UFC Champion Brock Lesnar appears off the cards, WWE has not given up interest in running a big crossover angle at WrestleMania 27.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Vince McMahon has come to grips with the fact that the current WWE roster, on its own, probably cannot pop a monster WM buyrate and is looking elsewhere to generate additional interest.

The Observer story was cryptic in its discussion of some of the ideas, most of which it reports have already been ruled out. One such idea, which apparently has been “done before,” would have generated “gigantic mainstream” interest in the show, but that plan has reportedly already fallen through.

Another idea was not as big from a mainstream perspective, but the feeling was that the idea still would have been successful; the anticipated “brilliant” dynamic involving this celebrity and the WWE counterpart would have almost definitely been more effective than the commercially-successful Vince McMahon-Donald Trump angle from several years ago.

That idea, too, has been ruled out.

Nonetheless, the feeling is that WWE will keep pushing for ideas to help WrestleMania remain as immune as possible from the ongoing pay-per-view buyrate woes.
