After shocking the world with a “where did that come from” knockout against Josh Koscheck, Thiago was brought back down to earth with a definitive loss to Koscheck’s teammate Jon Fitch.
Following a rebound victory over Jakob Volkmann, Thiago was booked for a rematch with Koscheck on the UFC 109: Relentless card. When Koscheck was forced to withdraw, Swick, another “Kos” ally, took the fight.
Would this fight play out like Thiago-Koscheck? Or, would Swick prevent Thiago from joining the top of the Welterweight pack?
The answer: it was more like the former. With neither man gaining a clear advantage in round one, Thiago made things happen in the early part of the second round. After rocking Swick on the feet, Thiago quickly took control and slapped a D’arce choke on his opponent, putting Swick to sleep and securing the submission victory.
Paulo Thiago defeated Mike Swick via submission (D’arce choke) at 1:54 of Round Two.
