During the Top 10 round of “American Idol” season seven, David Cook performed Chris Cornell’s version of the Michael Jackson classic “Billie Jean.”<\/p>\n

There was some controversy over the performance; unaware that Cook was performing Cornell’s version, the judges praised the contestant for his unique arrangement. Cornell fans understandably took issue.<\/p>\n

There was not, however, any debate about the quality of the performance: it was outstanding. It established Cook as the clear frontrunner (and he did end up winning) and is widely considered one of the best performances in the history of “American Idol.”<\/p>\n

Cornell passed away following a concert Wednesday night. As news of the passing circulated Thursday morning, Cook commented on the immensely influential vocalist.<\/p>\n

“To one of the most influential voices of my musical upbringing, RIP Mr Cornell,” wrote the “American Idol” winner.<\/p>\n
