Like lead single “Sign Of The Times,” the song is rich with classic rock influences. Powered by live instruments, it represents a change-of-pace from the EDM-leaning pop so common on today’s charts.<\/p>\n
Styles’ performance was not perfect, but it seemed to resonate fairly well with fans. Many longtime One Direction and Harry Styles fans were impressed with his prowess as a solo performer, while older viewers averse to modern pop appreciated his throwback spirit.<\/p>\n
The performance did, however, give rise to an interesting debate.<\/p>\n
Across numerous social networks, viewers noted a similarity between a lick featured throughout “Ever Since New York” and the iconic lick from Badfinger’s “Baby Blue.”<\/p>\n
Some accused Styles of stealing from Badfinger and the late Pete Ham (the lead vocalist and composer for Badfinger; he wrote “Baby Blue”), but it is important to note that neither the recording nor the song’s official credits have been released. It is possible proper acknowledgement has been provided (or will be provided by the time the recording arrives).<\/p>\n
