It failed to match the numbers for last week’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” debut, but the rebooted “Star Trek” performed well enough to dominate its debut weekend at the box office.<\/p>\n

According to estimates, the film grossed $72.5 million this weekend; an additional $4 million was earned during Thursday night presentations.<\/p>\n

Having landed in the high-end of projections, the JJ Abrams-directed film, one of the best reviewed of the year, will likely score a\u00a0sequel<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Wolverine” declined 68% to $27 million for second, while “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” which debuted to a disappointing number last week, held up relatively well due to the absence of new competition for the female demographic. It earned $10.5 million for third place.<\/p>\n

“Next Day Air,” the other new release, earned a mere $4 million on 1138 screens.<\/p>\n
