By now, it is well known that the “American Idol” finale dominated the Wednesday ratings race yet failed to live up to the show’s lofty historical track record for season finales.<\/p>\n
But while the show’s year-over-year decline is worth noting, it is also important to again recognize how dominant the show can be among a wide array of key demographics. Though its reputation of being a “chick show” is not nullified by the data, the season finale also performed extremely well among important male demographics.<\/p>\n
According to Mediaweek, the show, which averaged a total of 24.215 million viewers on an 8.2 adults 18-49 rating, posted a strong 8.4 with women 18-34. It did a 10.3 with women 18-49 and a 12.2 among women 25-54; the latter category’s share was a whopping 30%, indicating that nearly a third of women 25-54 who were watching TV from 8PM-10:07PM Wednesday night were watching “American Idol.”<\/p>\n
Among males, the show posted a solid 4.6 with males 18-34, as well as a 6.1 with males 18-49. The men 25-54 figure was a strong 7.4, indicating that men in the middle-to-upper end of the “young male” segment were quite intrigued by the show, which crowned Lee DeWyze the ninth “Idol” winner.<\/p>\n
The show did a 4.6 with teens 12-17 and a 4.7 with kids two through eleven.<\/p>\n
