With a drop-off well within acceptable territory, “Shutter Island” managed to score a second consecutive week atop the box office chart.<\/p>\n
The Martin Scorsese-directed thriller added $22.2 million to its take, holding off competition from two high-profile new releases.<\/p>\n
Of the two new films, buddy comedy “Cop Out” performed best, landing in second place for the weekend with an estimated $18.6 million. “The Crazies” followed with $16.5 million.<\/p>\n
Though the total for “Crazies” was within expectations and solid for a film of the mod, its total marks a slight disappointment given the film’s glowing reviews. The excess of positive buzz evidently did little to escalate the film’s total above that which is typical for a horror remake.<\/p>\n
“Avatar” ($14 million) and “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief” ($9.8 million) rounded out the top five.<\/p>\n
