Down from the 3.8 rating and 11.54 million viewership mark posted in last year’s corresponding fast nationals, this year’s American Music Awards ceremony drew a 3.5 adults 18-49 rating with 10.98 million total viewers.<\/p>\n
It was not, however, steady across the entire three hours.<\/p>\n
The broadcast reached its peak — in both adults 18-49 and total viewership — during the 9-9:30PM half hour. The section, which drew a 3.7 adults 18-49 rating and 11.81 million total viewers, began during Ariana Grande’s performance and also featured numbers by One Direction, Gwen Stefani, and Nick Jonas (the beginning).<\/p>\n
Not simply host to musical performances, the half-hour also included the Best Soundtrack (Pitch Perfect 2) and Best Rap Album (Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint) award wins.<\/p>\n
With a 3.6 rating and 11.61 million total viewers, the 8:30-9PM half hour was second in both columns. It featured One Direction’s win for Group, Carrie Underwood’s performance, Demi Lovato’s performance, the Meghan Trainor\/Charlie Puth performance, and Luke Bryan’s win for Country Male.<\/p>\n
Awards shows tend to peak during the 8:30-10PM portion, so the aforementioned performers may not deserve complete credit for the heightened ratings. The peak numbers do, however, confirm that the 8:30PM and 9PM performers performed before the night’s greatest total audiences.<\/p>\n
