Update:<\/b> As the overnight household data suggested, “A to Z” turned away a sizable portion of the “Bad Judge” viewership Thursday.<\/em><\/p>\n

What the overnights did not adequately indicate, however, was the extent to which both shows underperformed in the demo.<\/em><\/p>\n

Not as young-skewing as series like “Parks & Recreation” and “Community,” the two NBC comedies delivered poor adults 18-49 ratings despite respectable viewership averages (by NBC’s comedy standards).<\/em><\/p>\n

At 9PM, “Bad Judge” drew a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating with 5.86 million viewers. “A to Z” followed at 9:30PM with a 1.2 rating and 4.81 million watchers.<\/em><\/p>\n

NBC also offered “The Biggest Loser” (1.3, 4.72 million) and “Parenthood” (1.3, 4.36 million).<\/em><\/p>\n

Neither “Bad Judge” nor “A to Z” opened as a ratings blockbuster for NBC. One of the two new comedies, however, performed considerably worse than the other.<\/p>\n

“A to Z,” that weak link, drew a 3.3 overnight household rating at 9:30PM. Since NBC comedies skew in favor of younger viewers, the 3.3 household number does not rule out the possibility that the show drew passably in adults 18-49. It does, however, reveal that the show turned away a considerable portion of its “Bad Judge” lead-in.<\/p>\n

That series, which opened the hour at 9PM, posted a 4.4 overnight household rating. Skew will determine whether that translates into a solid or merely tolerable adults 18-49 rating, but nothing will change the fact that it is clearly the stronger of NBC’s new 9PM comedy offerings.<\/p>\n

The aforementioned adults 18-49 ratings–and total viewership data–will go to print by noon.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the night, NBC offered 8PM competition series “The Biggest Loser” (3.3).
