<\/a>Retaining the lead it garnered in its premiere Friday, “The Final Destination” cruised to a dominant box office victory.<\/p>\n
According to weekend estimates, the fourth film in the “Final Destination” franchise–and the first to utilize 3-D screens–earned $28.3 million. The strong total–well ahead of high-teens projections–distanced “Destination” from the competition.<\/p>\n
In second place was “Inglourious Basterds,” which rebounded from a disappointing Friday to top new release “Halloween II.” “Basterds,” last week’s winner, ended up dropping 47% to $20 million. “Halloween II,” the Rob Zombie-directed sequel to his 2007 remake of the horror classic, grossed $17.4 million.<\/p>\n
Holdovers “District 9” and “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” completed the top five with $10.7 million and $8 million, respectively.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, “Taking Woodstock,” the non-horror new release this weekend, made little more than a minor dent with $3.7 million in ninth place.<\/p>\n
