Acting as if the mere act of seeing the movie would constitute a sin, moviegoers avoided “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.”<\/p>\n
The new film earned a paltry $6.5 million at the weekend box office, according to weekend estimates. Only enough for an eighth place finish, the total represented a decline of 78% from the $29.1 million earned by the 2005 original in its first weekend.<\/p>\n
“Guardians of the Galaxy” reclaimed the weekend box office on the strength of $17.6 million in receipts. It crossed the $250 million threshold this weekend and now ranks as 2014’s third-highest-grossing film. By next week, “Guardians” will have topped “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (currently at $259.8 million) and “The Lego Movie” ($257.7 million) to become the year’s biggest release.<\/p>\n
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” last week’s number one, slipped into the #2 position with $16.8 million, which pushed new release “If I Stay” down to #3.<\/p>\n
Lacking comedic competition, “Let’s Be Cops” held up well with a dip to #11.0 million. It edged newcomer “When the Game Stands Tall” (#5, $9.0 million) for fourth place.<\/p>\n
