We may never know why it happened. But we do know that it happened.<\/p>\n
While performing a stripped down rendition of Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” on Wednesday’s “American Idol,” contestant Dexter Roberts conspicuously changed one of the song’s most recognizable lyrics.<\/p>\n
Instead of singing, “In a brand new Chevy with a lift kit,” Roberts sang, “In a brand new pickup with a lift kit.”<\/p>\n
Not directly addressed during the episode, the substitution garnered attention from the “American Idol” fanbase.<\/p>\n
Naturally, that attention focused on whether Ford, one of the flagship sponsors for “American Idol,” required the contestant remove the reference to its competitor.<\/p>\n
Others wondered whether Roberts, himself, simply refused to endorse Chevy.<\/p>\n
As of press time, no official word has been offered to confirm or refute either claim. What can be dismissed, however, is the possibility that the pressure of the live show caused Roberts to accidentally sing the wrong lyric.
