It would take legitimate psychic abilities to know whether “Psych” will continue after this season.<\/p>\n
One would not even need Shawn Spencer’s observational acuity, however, to see that from a ratings standpoint, the show’s best days are behind it.<\/p>\n
Wednesday’s “Psych,” which kicked off the show’s eighth season, delivered a modest 0.8 adults 18-49 rating with 2.28 million. Though respectable by cable standards, the performance trailed the 1.0 rating and 2.94 million viewership mark posted by the season seven premiere.<\/p>\n
It also represented the show’s weakest season premiere performance to date.<\/p>\n
Noting the light episode order (just eight at the time of the announcement in December 2012), many assumed the eighth season of “Psych” would be its last.<\/p>\n
USA never officially confirmed that speculation and later gave fans reason for optimism by ordering an additional five scripts from the “Psych” team.<\/p>\n
That only two made it production tempered some of that optimism. The deflated premiere ratings will not provide a counteracting supply of positivity.<\/p>\n
— In other cable news, Wednesday’s “American Horror Story: Coven” posted a 1.8 rating with 3.49 million viewers.
