Beating the monster that is “Gravity” was going to be a tall order, but new release “Carrie” certainly could have put up a stronger fight.<\/p>\n
The remake, which received lukewarm reviews, underwhelmed with just $17 million in box office receipts this weekend. Less than expected and far less than desired, the total was only good enough for third place on the initial charts: “Gravity” earned a third straight number one with $31.0 million, while “Captain Phillips” attracted $17.3 million in its second frame.<\/p>\n
“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” claimed fourth with $10.1 million, while “Escape Plan” settled for fifth with $9.8 million. The unimpressive performance for the Sylvester Stallone\/Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle was expected; neither is a box office draw in today’s climate.<\/p>\n
