“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” slipped considerably in its second weekend of release, but thanks to terrible performances from an array of newcomers, the Peter Jackson film still won the box office battle.<\/p>\n
“Hobbit” fell a whopping 57% from its opening weekend to earn just $36.7 million, but that tally was easily enough to top the $15.6 million posted by “Jack Reacher.” Though slightly above late tracking, the total is certainly disappointing for an action flick starring a high-profile name like Tom Cruise.<\/p>\n
Still, “Reacher” was nowhere near the weekend’s biggest disappointment. Judd Apatow’s “This is 40,” the “sort of sequel” to “Knocked Up” that scored the worst critical reviews of the director’s career, also debuted to the worst opening box office performance. With just $12.0 million in receipts, “40” earned considerably less than half of what “Knocked Up” garnered in its first outing ($30.7 million).<\/p>\n
And the disappointments continued. Behind holdovers “Rise of the Guardians” ($5.9 million) and “Lincoln” ($5.6 million) was utter box office flop “The Guilt Trip.” The Seth Rogen-Barbra Streisand vehicle net just $5.4 million, bringing its five-day cume to a paltry $7.4 million.<\/p>\n
