“Thor” predictably won the weekend box office battle, grossing an estimated total that more than doubles that of its nearest competitor.<\/p>\n
Estimates have the comic adaptation grossing $66 million in its first weekend, which puts it right on par with most projections. The well-reviewed picture therefore had little trouble topping last week’s winner “Fast Five,” which fell to $32.5 million for its second week. Though that makes for a big 62% drop, it is consistent with the trajectory for “Fast & Furious” and thus still keeps the current sequel more than $20 million ahead of its predecessor.<\/p>\n
Low-budget “Jumping the Broom” impressed at number three, posting a very-respectable $13.7 million in its first outing. If the estimate holds up, it will have narrowly-topped the more high-profile “Something Borrowed,” which landed at $13.2 million despite releasing in about 900 more theatres.<\/p>\n
On the platform front, there was little fanfare for Mel Gibson’s “The Beaver.” The film pulled only $104,000 from 22 screens, making for a terrible $4700 per-screen average.<\/p>\n
