href=\"http:\/\/headlineplanet.com\/home\/2017\/12\/30\/2017s-best-pop-hits-miley-cyrus-bruno-mars-chainsmokers-childish-gambino-shawn-mendes-make-top-15\/\">Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, The Chainsmokers &amp; Coldplay, Childish Gambino and Shawn Mendes<\/a> in the Top 15.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we are proud to move into the Top 10.<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder, the countdown ranks songs that first charted at pop radio in 2017 &#8212; and reached at least the Top 20 for airplay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10) Perfect by Ed Sheeran<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-counter-1\" class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper \" style=\"width:662px;\" data-g1-fluid-width=\"662\" data-g1-fluid-height=\"372\">\n<div class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-inner\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.19335347432%;\">\n\t       <iframe width=\"662\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2Vv-BfVoq4g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t       <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To the glass-half-empty listener, \u201cPerfect\u201d was a shameless attempt to capitalize on the success of \u201cThinking Out Loud.\u201d\u00a0 Ed Sheeran already struck gold with a \u201cfirst dance\u201d ballad; why not try another?<\/p>\n<p>To the glass-half-full listener, \u201cPerfect\u201d was a rather bold release for Sheeran.\u00a0 It took gall to release a song like this, knowing it would be compared to the incredibly beloved (and incredibly successful) \u201cThinking Out Loud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perspective on the strategy aside, it is hard to deny that \u201cPerfect\u201d is a great song.<\/p>\n<p>The lyrics are clear and relatable, the melody is gorgeous, the composition builds perfectly, and Sheeran sings with his always-engaging voice.\u00a0 Collectively, the factors yield a stunning, timeless, glorious ballad.<\/p>\n<p>One, it should be noted, that emerged in an era sadly devoid of big, sweeping love songs.<\/p>\n<p>Sheeran has a way of making music that spans genres and demographics without feeling uncertain or insincere.\u00a0 \u201cPerfect\u201d is a great illustration of that ability.<\/p>\n<p>Superb remixes with Beyonce and Andrea Bocelli helped the song hit\u00a0#1 across the globe \u2013 and become something of a pop culture event &#8211; at the end of 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The original version, however, was already a wonderful display of Ed Sheeran&#8217;s incredible talent.<\/p>\n<p>It already had the qualities needed to be one of the year&#8217;s best pop hits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9) Sign Of The Times by Harry Styles<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-counter-2\" class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper \" style=\"width:662px;\" data-g1-fluid-width=\"662\" data-g1-fluid-height=\"372\">\n<div class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-inner\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.19335347432%;\">\n\t       <iframe width=\"662\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qN4ooNx77u0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t       <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is easy to get swept up in the narrative surrounding Harry Styles\u2019 debut single \u201cSign Of The Times\u201d (as well as the entirety of his debut solo album).\u00a0 The most marketable One Direction member \u2013 the one for whom success as a mainstream pop artist seemed most certain \u2013 avoided the obvious path and released an authentic classic rock record.<\/p>\n<p>What is not to love?\u00a0 What is not to appreciate?<\/p>\n<p>The value of \u201cSign Of The Times\u201d is about more than the admirable strategy, however.\u00a0 It is about the remarkable quality of the record.<\/p>\n<p>Guided by producer Jeff Bhasker, \u201cSign Of The Times\u201d takes listeners on an absolutely epic ride.\u00a0 In an era with so many \u201clinear\u201d songs, \u201cSign Of The Times\u201d understands \u2013 and showcases \u2013 the importance of peaks and valleys.<\/p>\n<p>Every moment is meticulously designed and calculated, yet the song never feels constrained or inorganic.\u00a0 The build is seamless, natural and believable, yielding a magical journey deserving of the David Bowie and Beatles comparisons it immediately garnered.<\/p>\n<p>While the production and composition are superb, one cannot Harry Styles\u2019 contribution.\u00a0 This is not an artist coasting on the \u201crisk\u201d he took.\u00a0 It is not an artist merely looking to deliver a competent performance.\u00a0 It is an artist singing with everything he has.\u00a0 It is a hungry, committed, impressive vocal performance that turns a well-developed song into an utterly powerful one.<\/p>\n<p>The song \u2013 particularly the ending \u2013 would not be what it is without Styles\u2019 compelling performance.<\/p>\n<p>There are definitely some questions for Harry Styles moving forward.\u00a0 Will he attempt to \u201cmodernize\u201d his style for mainstream radio (\u201cSign Of The Times\u201d charted respectably, but follow-ups \u201cTwo Ghosts\u201d and \u201cKiwi\u201d underperformed)?\u00a0 Will he narrow his \u201cclassic rock\u201d focus to establish a more specific identity on album two?<\/p>\n<p>There is no question, however, that \u201cSign Of The Times\u201d was a great start to Harry Styles\u2019 solo career.\u00a0 There is no question that it was one of the best pop hits of 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8) Shape of You by Ed Sheeran<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-counter-3\" class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper \" style=\"width:662px;\" data-g1-fluid-width=\"662\" data-g1-fluid-height=\"372\">\n<div class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-inner\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.19335347432%;\">\n\t       <iframe width=\"662\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JGwWNGJdvx8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t       <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When artists claim that a new song represents an \u201cevolution\u201d rather than a \u201cdeparture,\u201d they are often in denial \u2013 or simply lying.\u00a0 They very often <em>did<\/em> lose sight of the elements that made them famous.<\/p>\n<p>That is not the case for Ed Sheeran\u2019s \u201cShape Of You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It may not sound precisely like his past releases, but it unquestionably bears the mark of Ed Sheeran.\u00a0 It features the recognizable lyricism, the humble, inviting vibe, the engaging, rhythm-conscious vocal delivery that had already made Sheeran one of music\u2019s most beloved, successful acts.<\/p>\n<p>It just so happens to also feature particularly stellar production, an especially engaging melody (one that, admittedly, borrows from \u201cNo Scrubs\u201d on the pre-chorus) and a ridiculously infectious hook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShape Of You\u201d pairs the best of Ed Sheeran with the hallmark qualities of an amazing pop record.\u00a0 The result is an incredibly appealing, supremely enjoyable piece of pop music \u2013 that deservedly became one of the world\u2019s two biggest hits of the year (alongside \u201cDespacito\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Just as his friend Taylor Swift proved with her Grammy-winning \u201c1989\u201d album, Sheeran\u2019s \u201cShape Of You\u201d confirms that he can channel everything that makes him special in a universally accessible pop record.\u00a0 \u201cShape Of You\u201d is not a story of Ed Sheeran ditching his identity to make an innocuous pop song.\u00a0 It is a story of Sheeran leveraging broad pop sensibility to better communicate his unique style.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of commercial impact, Ed Sheeran unquestionably ranks as music\u2019s MVP for 2017.\u00a0 \u201cShape Of You\u201d jumpstarted the banner year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShape Of You\u201d was the first major pop hit released in 2017.\u00a0 It was also one of the year\u2019s best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7) Feel It Still By Portugal. The Man<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-counter-4\" class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper \" style=\"width:662px;\" data-g1-fluid-width=\"662\" data-g1-fluid-height=\"372\">\n<div class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-inner\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.19335347432%;\">\n\t       <iframe width=\"662\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pBkHHoOIIn8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t       <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Suggesting an alternative record is suited for pop radio can have a negative or positive connotation.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, it is a criticism of the song.\u00a0 It is a claim that the song is not heavy, exciting or different enough to warrant an \u201calternative\u201d label \u2013 it belongs in the safe, \u201cboring\u201d world of pop.<\/p>\n<p>In other cases, it is a commentary on the song\u2019s universal brilliance.\u00a0 Yes, it is unique, creative and compelling, but it is far too interesting and engaging to be constrained to a certain niche of the market.\u00a0 It needs to be front-and-center.\u00a0 It needs to be mainstream.\u00a0 It needs to help define the state of pop music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFeel It Still\u201d undoubtedly fits into the latter category.<\/p>\n<p>Portugal. The Man\u2019s career-defining record is a legitimate, credible display of modern rock.\u00a0 With a quirky vibe, self-assured instrumentation, striking vocals and an endless supply of \u201crock and roll\u201d energy, is exactly the kind of record alternative radio should be embracing.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond its fit for alternative radio, it feels true to the band\u2019s style and discography.<\/p>\n<p>It nonetheless possesses enormous pop sensibility.\u00a0 The infectious hook, addictive bassline and memorable lyrics establish \u201cFeel It Still\u201d as an absurdly appealing, universally accessible smash.<\/p>\n<p>While the song makes use of melody from \u201cPlease Mr. Postman,\u201d a comparison can certainly be made to \u201cHappy.\u201d\u00a0 Portugal.
