Backstage Look: FOX’s “New Girl” Returns For Season 5, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Moves

Off for the fall, FOX’s “New Girl” finally premieres its fifth season this Tuesday.

The episode airs as part of a revamped Tuesday night lineup. “New Girl” begins the night at 8PM, before leading into freshman comedy “Grandfathered.” Returning to its original Tuesday night home, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” occupies the 9PM half-hour, while freshman “The Grinder” closes the night at 9:30PM.

In advance of Tuesday’s broadcasts, FOX shared synopses (for all four) and behind-the-scenes photos (for “New Girl,” “Grandfathered” and “Brooklyn”). Those follow.

New Girl: When Cece and Schmidt ask Jess and Nick to be their Maid of Honor and Best Man, respectively, their first task is to plan the engagement party. But when Jess invites Cece’s mom to join in the celebration, Cece is forced to make a surprising announcement to Schmidt in the all-new “Big Mama P” season premiere episode of NEW GIRL airing Tuesday, Jan. 5 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Grandfathered: After hearing that Jimmy hasn’t been to the doctor in more than 10 years, Sara and Gerald trick him into seeing their family doctor (Dr. Phil McGraw) for a routine physical, which results in an unsettling discovery. Meanwhile, Gerald and Vanessa stress over Edie’s upcoming surgery, and Annelise and Ravi stumble upon Jimmy’s secret safe in the all-new “Perfect Physical Specimen” time period premiere episode of GRANDFATHERED airing Tuesday, Jan. 5 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Charles and Genevieve (guest star Mary Lynn Rajskub) want to take their relationship to a new level, but his ex-wife, Eleanor (guest star Kathryn Hahn), steamrolls their plans. Meanwhile, Amy asks Terry to write a recommendation letter with disastrous results, and Holt and Rosa enlist Gina’s help to solve a case in the all-new “Hostage Situation” time period premiere episode of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE airing Tuesday, Jan. 5 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

The Grinder: After Dean catches Timothy Olyphant making out with Claire, he thinks he can “win her back” by taking the lead on a case – and using very questionable tactics – representing a friend of hers. Meanwhile, Stewart is excited that a reporter is writing a story on him, but becomes upset when Dean steals the spotlight in the all-new “The Olyphant in the Room” time period premiere episode airing Tuesday, Jan. 5 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
