“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” Conquers US Weekend Box Office With #2 All-Time Opening

“The Last Jedi” got off to a predictably massive start at the US weekend box office.

In an utterly unsurprising outcome, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” delivered one of the biggest opening weekend performances in US box office history.

Per studio estimates, the new “Star Wars” film earned $220.0 million in its opening weekend.

The figure ranks as the second-biggest weekend gross ever. Only 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($248.0 million) had a bigger one.

“The Last Jedi,” meanwhile, is just the fourth film to gross more than $200 million in a weekend. “Jurassic World” ($208.8 million) and “Marvel’s The Avengers” ($207.4 million) are the two non-“Star Wars” films to achieve the feat.

The $220.0 million bow was, obviously, enough for #1 at this weekend’s box office.

Fellow newcomer “Ferdinand,” which takes #2 on the chart, earned $13.3 million.

“Coco” slips two spots to #3 with $10.0 million (cume now $150.8 million), while “Wonder” dips one place to #4 with $5.4 million (cume now $109.3 million).

“Justice League,” which was #2 last weekend, takes #5 on this weekend’s chart. It added $4.2 million to its haul (cume now $219.5 million).
