“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” Debuts With Second-Biggest Day In US Box Office History

Only “The Force Awakens” earned more money in a single day.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” predictably got off to a scorching start at the US weekend box office.

The new “Star Wars” film earned $104.8 million Friday (including Thursday previews).

The mammoth tally represents the second-biggest daily gross in US box office history. Only predecessor “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” earned more in one day ($119.1 million).

Friday’s best figure by a factor of 29, the tally positions “The Last Jedi” for an opening weekend in excess of $200 million.

“Ferdinand,” which earned $3.6 million, was Friday’s #2 film. “Coco” grabbed #3 with $2.2 million, while a tally of $1.5 million positioned “Wonder” as the day’s #4 film.

Credited with $1.0 million in Friday receipts, “Justice League” was the day’s #5 performer.
