“Suicide Squad” Dominates Friday Box Office, Sets August Record

Suicide Squad [Official WB Pictures Production Still]

With a single-day total that easily ranks as the greatest ever achieved in the month of August, “Suicide Squad” dominated the Friday US box office.

The new film grossed an impressive $65.1 million on Friday. The tally obliterates the previous one-day August record of $37.8 million, which was set by “Guardians Of The Galaxy” in August 2014.

The tally obviously puts “Suicide Squad” on pace to set the August opening weekend record. Current indications are that it could do upward of $140 million by the close of business on Sunday; the existing record, also belonging to “Guardians,” is $94.3 million.

It also bests that of Friday’s #2 film by a factor of nearly 10. “Jason Bourne,” that #2 film, added $6.6 million to its haul Friday.

“Bad Moms” took third with $4.5 million, while “The Secret Life Of Pets” earned fourth place with $3.3 million. A Friday gross of $2.6 million slots “Star Trek Beyond” at #5, one place ahead of new release “Nine Lives” ($2.4 million, #6).
