Disturbed’s “The Sound Of Silence” Impacts Pop Radio On May 3

Disturbed’s cover of “The Sound Of Silence,” which has spent the past seven weeks as active rock’s #1 song and is quickly climbing the alternative airplay chart, is formally headed to pop radio.

WB Records confirms that the song will go for pop adds on May 3.

While labels do not typically promote active rock hits to pop radio, “The Sound Of Silence” represents a unique case. It is a cover of a well-known classic and far more restrained and broadly accessible than prototypical rock singles.

That accessibility has been demonstrated by its sales performance; whereas most active rock hits are lucky to reach the Top 200 on iTunes, “The Sound Of Silence” has spent the past several weeks inside the Top 30. It is clearly resonating with an audience not typically engaged by rock songs.

Amid talk of a potential pop push, “The Sound Of Silence” began to receive early airplay last month.

Any meaningful success would be new for Disturbed, which has never charted at the pop format.

— Other songs going for adds on May 3 include Selena Gomez’ “Kill Em With Kindness” and Sofia Carson’s “Love Is The Name.”
