Thanks to a total that handily beat the industry forecast, “Straight Outta Compton” dominated the Friday box office race.

“Compton” earned $24.2 million on Friday (with Thursday’s midnight screenings included). The total, which positions the film for an opening weekend in comfortable excess of $50 million, kept “Compton” at a significant distance from the rest of the box office pack.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” the day’s #2 film, earned $4.9 million.

“The Man from UNCLE” earned a similar $4.9 million, and took the #3 spot on Friday. That positions the new release for a weekend total in the mid-to-low teens.

“Fantastic Four” ($2.4 million, #4) and “The Gift” ($1.9 million, #5) completed Friday’s top five.
