“Rogue Nation” Bests “Fantastic Four” in Weekend Box Office Race; “The Gift” Hits #3

An immensely disappointing “Fantastic Four” performance allowed “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” to retain its weekend box office crown.

Per studio estimates, “Rogue Nation” was to earn $29.4 million during the August 7-9 weekend. “Fantastic Four,” which performed poorly by the standards of a high-profile superhero film, earned $26.2 million. It claims the weekend’s #2 position.

Abysmal reviews and a general lack of enthusiasm in the franchise seem to be responsible for the soft start.

Thanks to a weekend gross of $12.0 million, critically acclaimed new release “The Gift” takes third. “Vacation” ($9.1 million) and “Ant-Man” ($7.8 million) complete the top five.

“Ricki and the Flash,” the other semi-major new release (it launched in 1,603 theaters), earned $7.0 million. It grabs #7.
