“Avengers: Age of Ultron” Misses Predecessor’s Record at Weekend Box Office

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” did not set a new opening day box office record.

It also failed to set a new opening weekend record.

US box office estimates reveal that the sequel to 2012’s “The Avengers” earned $187.7 million this weekend. Enough to obliterate this weekend’s competition, the tally nonetheless trails the record-setting $207.4 million earned by the film’s predecessor.

The “Age of Ultron” total ranks second on the all-time list.

As for this weekend, its next-closest competition came from “The Age of Adaline,” which earned $6.3 million. Destroyed by the release of “Age of Ultron,” “Furious 7” slipped to #3 with just $6.1 million in receipts, while “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” ($5.5 million, #4) and “Home” ($3.3 million, #4) completed the top five.
