“Avengers: Age of Ultron” Misses Opening Day Box Office Record

While it bested that of 2012’s “The Avengers” and still positions the film for a monstrous weekend, the opening day sum for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” did not set a record at the US box office.

In registering at $84.5 million, Friday’s “Ultron” gross trails the $91.1 million earned by the debuting “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” on July 15, 2011.

As the second-best opening day mark of all-time, it does, however, best the $80.8 million earned by “The Avengers” on May 4, 2012. It also allowed “Ultron” to obliterate the competition this Friday.

“The Age of Adaline,” the runner-up, earned a mere $2.2 million Friday. “Furious 7” followed with $2.1 million, while “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” ($1.8 million, #4) and “Home” ($0.9 million, #5) completed the top five.
