“The Hobbit” Overcomes “Woman in Black” at Friday Box Office

“The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death” put up a fight at the Friday box office, but it was no match for “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.”

The reigning box office champion added $8.4 million to its take Friday, while the new horror sequel scored $7.8 million. Expected to build on that lead as the weekend unfolds, “The Hobbit” appears poised for a third consecutive weekend box office victory.

“Into the Woods” landed in third Friday with $7.5 million, while “Unbroken” narrowly followed with $7.4 million. With $5.9 million, “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” registered the day’s fifth-best total.
