The reviews favored “John Wick,” but moviegoers were more interested in a competitive new offering.

“Ouija,” not “Wick,” reigned atop the Friday box office.

Inspired by the iconic “Board” of the same name, “Ouija” earned $8.3 million in its first day of release. That gave it the edge over Keanu Reeves’ critical favorite “John Wick,” which earned only $5.5 million.

“Fury,” last week’s winner, claimed third on Friday with $4.1 million. Former two-week number one “Gone Girl” claimed fourth with $3.5 million, while new release “St. Vincent” was good for $2.6 million and fifth place.
