Update: Because they measure household viewership within a limited number of markets, the overnight ratings do not always successfully signal performance in the adults 18-49 demographic.

Wednesday’s “black-ish” provides a front row seat to that occasional translation failure.

Despite dipping by 7% in the overnight household ratings, ABC’s new comedy actually enjoyed an 8% lift in adults 18-49 this week. The show’s third episode drew a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating.

Indicative of a younger skew, total viewership nonetheless fell slightly–to 7.95 million–this week.

ABC’s other Wednesday programming included “The Middle” (2.0 adults 18-49 rating, 7.35 million), “The Goldbergs” (2.2, 6.70 million), “Modern Family” (3.4, 10.07 million) and “Nashville” (1.5, 5.48 million).

Note that ABC’s programming has been frequently subject to daily ratings adjustments this season, so make sure to return at 5:30PM ET for the final broadcast numbers.
==========

ABC’s “black-ish” endured another overnight ratings drop this week, but the decline pales in comparison to the substantial one that plagued episode two.

After falling 20% from week one to week two, “black-ish” restricted its week three loss to 7%. Leading out of “Modern Family” (7.1) Wednesday, the new comedy drew a 5.7 overnight household rating.

As far as the overnight household numbers go, “black-ish” ranked second in its timeslot. Only CBS’ “Criminal Minds” drew better.

Earlier in the night, ABC offered “The Middle” (5.2 overnight household rating) and “The Goldbergs” (4.7). It closed its evening with “Nashville” (4.0) at 10PM.
