Ratings: The CW’s “Originals” Returns on a Down Note (Updated)

Update: Portrayed fairly by the soft overnight household number, The CW’s “Originals” kicked off its second season with weaker ratings than those of its series premiere and season one finale.

Monday’s episode drew a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating with 1.36 million viewers.  Last year, “The Originals” kicked off its first season (on a Thursday with support from “The Vampire Diaries”) with a 1.0 and 2.21 million.

It wrapped up its inaugural season on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 with a 0.8 and 1.76 million.

Airing on a challenging new night without the synergistic support of an original “Supernatural” episode, The CW’s “The Originals” began its second season on a down note.

Monday’s “Originals” drew a modest 1.0 overnight household rating. Down from the 1.7 posted by last year’s series premiere (which, in fairness, received a special post-“The Vampire Diaries” broadcast) and the 1.3 delivered by May’s season one finale, the number does not suggest “The Originals” is on track to dramatically revitalize Mondays for The CW.

Airing on October 3, 2013, last year’s “The Originals” series premiere ended up drawing a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating with 2.21 million viewers in the final Nielsen report. The May 13, 2014 season finale scored a 0.8 with 1.76 million viewers.

This week’s adults 18-49 and total viewership numbers are due by noon.

— Not wanting to completely starve “The Originals” of the synergy benefit, The CW also aired a “Supernatural” special Monday. It drew a 0.8 overnight household rating.
