Michael Che Replaces Cecily Strong on “Weekend Update”

Insofar as critics considered head writer Colin Jost the weak link of last year’s “Weekend Update” panel, some assumed “Saturday Night Live” would provide Cecily Strong with a new co-anchor this season.

That is not the change “SNL” made.

It is Strong, not Jost, who will be departing the “Weekend Update” desk.

NBC announced Thursday that comedian Michael Che will join Jost at the desk beginning with the season premiere on September 27.

Named one of Rolling Stone’s “50 Funniest People,” Che has served as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and as a correspondent on “The Daily Show.”

No longer needed as an “Update” anchor, “repertory player Cecily Strong will return as a full-time cast member.”
