“Guardians of the Galaxy” did more than simply win the Labor Day Weekend box office race. It also added enough to its cumulative gross to take over first place for 2014.

The additional $22.2 million earned by “Guardians” over the four-day Labor Day holiday brings the film’s total gross to $280.5 million. No other film has earned that much in 2014.

Going into the weekend, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” held the lead with $259.8 million.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” claimed second over Labor Day with $11.9 million in receipts. “If I Stay” finished in third with $9.3 million, while new release “As Above/So Below” settled for fourth with a modest $8.6 million.

“Let’s Be Cops” landed in fifth on the strength of $8.3 million. Newcomer “The November Man” rode its $7.9 million in receipts to a sixth place finish.
