John Cena and Seth Rollins are the big winners at the 2014 Money in the Bank show.
Going into Sunday’s Money in the Bank event, word broke that WWE was planning to book John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar at the upcoming Summerslam show. Since Lesnar is expected to challenge for the WWE World Heavyweight title at the annual Summerslam event, the news seemed to suggest that Cena would win the championship at Sunday’s Money in the Bank.
As the event drew near, WWE’s plans became less obvious. Buzz continued to surround the prospect of the red-hot Roman Reigns winning the gold, while late betting movement, surprisingly, favored Kane to make the successful climb up the ladder.
But when all was said and done Sunday, the original word was the correct one. John Cena won the Money in the Bank main-event to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
It remains unclear if WWE is still eyeing a Cena-Lesnar main-event at Summerslam, but it is now perfectly clear that Cena is entering his fifteenth reign as world champion.
– Earlier in the night, Seth Rollins, via an assist from Kane, won the traditional Money in the Bank ladder match to score the iconic briefcase. The briefcase entitles him to challenge for the WWE Championship at any point within the next year.
– None of the other titles changed hands. The Usos defeated Harper and Rowan to retain the tag titles, while Paige beat Naomi to keep hold of her Divas Championship.
– Layla defeated Summer Rae and thus left with referee Fandango.
