“The Fault in Our Stars” Dominates Box Office, “Edge of Tomorrow” Soft

There was little fault in “The Fault in Our Stars'” opening day box office performance.

The eagerly anticipated film earned a whopping $26.1 million from cinemas Friday. First for the evening by a multiple of more than 2, it will neither have trouble cruising to victory for the entire opening weekend nor struggle to cross the $50 million threshold in its first three days.

Despite its strong reviews, “Edge of Tomorrow” did not get off to a glowing start. The film claimed second for the night with a soft $10.7 million.

“Maleficent, last week’s winner, claimed third place with $10.1 million. Analysts, however, expect it will edge “Edge of Tomorrow” for second place by the time the weekend ends.

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” ($4.5 million) and “A Million Ways to Die in the West” ($2.2 million) filled out the top five.
