“Neighbors” Dominates Box Office, “Legends of Oz” Barely Registers

One new film enjoyed a colossal weekend at the box office. Another failed to make even a modest impact.

“Neighbors,” the former, dominated with a whopping $51.1 million in receipts. Better than expected, the total gave “Neighbors” a convincing win over number two film “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” The holdover settled for second place with $37.2 million in its second weekend of release.

“Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return,” the less successful new release, was only good for $3.7 million. It landed in eighth place.

New release “Moms’ Night Out,” which was available in less than half as many theaters as “Oz,” actually outranked the animated film with a $4.2 million, seventh place finish.

Outside of “Neighbors” and “Spider-Man,” other top five films included “The Other Woman” (3rd, $9.3 million), “Heaven is For Real” (4th, $7 million) and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (5th, $5.6 million).
