“Transcendence” Flops at Box Office, “Rio 2,” “Captain” Fight for #1

The new Johnny Depp film certainly did not transcend any box office expectations.

According to preliminary estimates, Depp’s “Transcendence” grossed just $4.8 million in its debut Friday. Good for just a fourth place finish, the $4.8 million Friday haul positions the film for an opening in the $12 million territory.

Battling for the weekend throne will once again be “Rio 2” and “Captain America: Winter Soldier.” Eyeing a third week at number one, the latter got off to a stronger start Friday. Its estimated $9.6 million haul topped the $9.2 million “Rio 2” claimed Friday night.

New release “Heaven is for Real” claimed third with approximately $7.9 million Friday, while “A Haunted House 2” settled for fifth courtesy a weak, $4.0 million Friday sum.
