“Captain America” Tops Original, Sets April Box Office Record

Proving itself a more valuable brand in 2014 than it was in 2011, the latest “Captain America” release debuted to a far stronger box office tally.

According to weekend estimates, “Captain America: Winter Soldier” earned a whopping $96.20 million from the cinemas this weekend. “Captain America: The First Avenger,” which bowed in the summer of 2011, only mustered $65.06 million.

The $96.20 million total also represents a record opening for an April film. 2011’s “Fast Five,” which earned $86.20 million in 2011, previously owned the record.

Other top five films this weekend included “Noah” ($17.00M), “Divergent” ($13.00M), “God’s Not Dead” ($7.73M) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” ($6.30M).
