HBO Confirms it Will Close “The Newsroom”

“Boardwalk Empire” will not be the only series departing HBO this year.

The premium cable network confirmed Monday that “The Newsroom” will conclude its run with the upcoming third season.

“The Newsroom is classic Aaron Sorkin – smart, riveting and thought-provoking,” said HBO’s Michael Lombardo. “I’m sure this farewell season will be one to remember.”

After earning solid reviews and ample buzz for its series premiere, “The Newsroom” became a punching bag for critics who ripped its preaching, political bias, hindsight-driven storytelling style and poor characterization (especially concerning the key female characters).

The show, nonetheless, hooked viewers well enough to score solid ratings for its season two premiere. It also garnered attention from awards bodies.

Star Jeff Daniels, in fact, won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor.

Though buzz faded during the show’s second season, most critics believe its creative voice improved greatly.
