“Catching Fire” Wins Weekend Box Office, Sets Two More Huge Records

Disney’s “Frozen” put up a good fight, but it was no match for reigning box office champion “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

Holding up considerably well for a tentpole, “Fire” earned an impressive $74.5 million over the three-day weekend. The haul, a decisive record for the post-Thanksgiving weekend, brings the film’s cumulative gross to $296.5 million. It is now the third biggest film of the year behind “Iron Man 3” and “Despicable Me 2.”

With Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving Day included, the “Games” sequel earned a record $110.1 million over the holiday.

“Frozen,” which earned $66.7 million over the three-day weekend (out of a five-day total of $93.0 million), claimed second in the weekend race. “Thor: The Dark World” ($15.5 million, $186.7M cum.), “The Best Man Holiday” ($8.5 million, $63.4M cum.) and new release “Homefront” ($7.0 million, $9.8M cum.) completed the top five.

“Black Nativity” and “Oldboy,” the week’s other notable releases, bowed on 1,516 and 583 screens for respective totals of $3.9 million (8th place) and $0.85 million (17th place).
