“Jackass: Bad Grandpa” Dominates, “Counselor” Flops at Box Office

Though it predictably slowed down after Friday’s dominant box office debut, “Jackass: Bad Grandpa” had no trouble claiming victory for the weekend.

The prank comedy garnered a healthy $32 million for a convincing spot at the box office’s apex. Down considerably from the gross for $50.4 million opener for 2010’s “Jackass 3D,” it topped the $22.8 and $29.0 million for 2002’s “Jackass: The Movie” and 2006’s “Jackass: Number Two,” respectively.

Forced to settle for second, “Gravity” still impressed by collecting an additional $20.3 million in receipts. The universally acclaimed film is now less than $200,000 away from the coveted $200 million milestone.

“Captain Phillips,” also a critical darling, added $11.8 million to its cumulative haul. That total gave “Phillips” comfortable distance from newcomer “The Counselor,” which flopped with a fourth-place, $8 million finish.

“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” was fifth with $6.1 million. In adding that amount, the film moved past the $100 million cumulative milestone.

If one looks lower–but not too much lower–he finds an impressive performance for “12 Years a Slave.” The buzzworthy release, which expanded into just 123 screens this weekend, dazzled with $2.2 million for eighth place. Its $17,480 per-screen average was the best of any film in the top twenty.
