“Agents of SHIELD” Avoids Another Big Ratings Drop

Update: The drop was not as massive as last week’s tumble, but it was a drop nonetheless.

Ratings for episode three of “Agents of SHIELD” fell by 15% to a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating. Though not significant enough to immediately sound any alarms, the drop is not miniscule enough to provide certainty that “SHIELD” will not fall farther in the coming weeks.

Of particular concern was the fact that its viewership declined over the course of the broadcast. Its 7.72 million viewer average came from half hours of 8.00 million and 7.44 million.

ABC’s 9PM comedy “The Goldbergs” fell to a 2.0 rating with 5.73 million viewers, while “Trophy Wife” was steady, but still disappointing, with a 1.4 and 4.69 million viewers.

Offering hope that it will settle into a solid range for ABC, “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” avoided another significant ratings drop Tuesday.

It did not avoid a decline completely — it was down to a 5.3 overnight metered market rating, 5% below what it posted last week — but it certainly conveyed more stability than it did with last week’s ratings crash. And if the adults 18-49 and total viewership experience the same, modest drop, the news will be very good for ABC and its heavily-hyped action series.

ABC’s 9PM comedy “The Goldbergs,” which drifted into underwhelming–but still acceptable–territory last week, fell to a 4.0 in the overnights Tuesday. Lead-out “Trophy Wife” matched last week’s 3.3, but insofar as last week’s episode flopped in the adults 18-49 and viewership categories, stability is not a good thing in this case. It needed to grow.

Filling in for the canceled “Lucky 7,” a re-run of “Scandal” posted a barely-there 2.3 at 10PM.
