“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” Crushes Box Office, “Rush” Falls

“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” extended its dominant Friday performance to claim a convincing weekend box office victory.

With an opening gross of $35 million, the film outperformed its predecessor and tripled the gross of its nearest competitor. “Prisoners,” that competitor, earned $11.3 million in its second week of release.

In climbing to second, “Prisoners” sent the newly-expanded “Rush” back to third place. The well-reviewed film underwhelmed with only $10.3 million.

New releases “Baggage Claim” ($9.3 million) and “Don Jon” ($9 million) followed to complete the top five, while “Metallica Through the Never,” which opened on 308 screens, earned $1.7 million for thirteenth place.
