Those anticipating a storyline twist in the aftermath of the Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena match were proven right Sunday.
Consistent with what had emerged as the most predictable angle for WWE Summerslam, guest referee Triple H turned on fan favorite Daniel Bryan to usher in the latest Randy Orton WWE Championship reign.
The twist came after a few moments of post-match festivities, in which HHH joined Bryan in celebrating the latter’s victory over John Cena. With the crowd screaming in support, the scrappy Daniel Bryan proudly commenced the beginning of his first stint as WWE Champion.
But that stint was not to last much longer. Randy Orton’s signature theme song brought the celebration to an end, and the Money in the Bank briefcase holder made his way down to the ring. Orton initially stopped, as if to suggest he was only there to put Bryan on notice, and began making his way back up the ramp.
That backwards journey came to a sudden, ominous halt, however, and Triple H put himself in position to give Daniel Bryan the Pedigree. After laying Bryan out with his famous finisher, HHH officiated Randy Orton’s Money in the Bank cash-in, counting three as The Viper pinned his helpless opponent.
Summerslam ended with Randy Orton and Triple H celebrating the swerve.
